Two hours north of Venice lies the town of Conegliano, its bombastic stucco buildings a statement of Italy’s Garibaldi-powered confidence. The village of Valdobbiadene (val-dob-YAH-dinnay) nearby is very different, its winding streets lined with rickety old houses perched along a steep hillside. Between these two very distinct towns lies one of Italy’s still-unsung delights: La Strada del Prosecco, or the Prosecco Road. Lining this winding loop are more than three dozen vineyards, or cantine, mostly family-run small holdings producing delicious versions of the Veneto region’s best-known wine, and the basis for Italy’s national cocktail, the Aperol Spritz. Unlike Champagne, Prosecco is a grape rather than a region-specific fruit and process, so the fizzy wine is also made elsewhere on the Italian peninsula. None is better than the Veneto’s version, though; here, some producers even offer small amounts of so-called Prosecco liscio, or still Prosecco, a treat that is hard to unearth outside of Italy.
The 4-star hotel located in the historical town centre of Conegliano, it has been beautifully refurbished in a classical style enhanced by antique furniture and works of fine art. It is the perfect base for wondering along the vineyards of the Prosecco Road through the hidden beauties on the hills between Venice and the Dolomites of Cortina d’Ampezzo. The hotel is located between shops, bars, typical trattorie and little restaurants in an old building of the 16th century with an original frescoes facade. The modern double bedrooms offer a private bathroom, TV, WIFI, Telephone, Air conditioning and central heating. The various services include the garden, the terrace bar, the adjacent restaurant, 24h bar services, and the internal car park.
